I think any sgian dubh, as long as it doesn't have a chunk of glass set on top of the pommel, works as a "day wear" sgian dubh. Formal evening wear is another kettle of fish, and here you probably should stick with silver mounts and (if you wish) caringorms, genuine or faux, to round out your dressiest attire.
