This is all great information. Thank you all. With any luck these will show the first time...otherwise I'll edit this message into a stupor until they do.
This is the dark jacket. It actually shows lighter in this photo, thanks to the flash. You can see what I was calling pinstripes...they actually seem to be subtle squares. In real life they're much harder to see. Again, thank you flash.

This is the grey jacket. Both jackets are pretty much the same style.

Are these alterable? I would need to find a tailor who can do that. I definitely don't have the talent.
Thanks, again, for all your help.

Kenneth,
Off the top of my head and I am no tailor, I would say that they can be done, but at a price. I think that they will cost too much to alter. It's the pockets, your tailor is going to spend an age and a lot of money messing around with those.
What you will end up with is a compromise. Why not save the money and put it towards a new jacket? Then if you have to go to a wedding, funeral, christening, whatever, you will be ready at a moments notice.
Regards
Chas

Agree with Chas. Alterations can be costly and tailors may not be easy to find. Relatively cheap Argyll jackets can be found on eBay until such time as you can acquire the funds for better quality. However they would be perfectly good enough for a few times per year.

Thanks, Chas and Grizzly, I was wondering about those pockets. I definitely prefer an easier route to end up with something that is going to look proper. I'm leaning now toward the black argyle that others have suggested.

I think you are wise, Kenneth. It all comes down to Value for Money. You say you are not a suit wearer, so don't buy a jacket that costs £600. One of the Pakistani jackets from someone like Heritage of Scotland will give you all you need for a fraction of the cost.

Another route might be to find an ex for-hire jacket. Many times you can find nice quality jackets for a fraction of their original price. Which route you decide to take, make sure that you enjoy yourself.

Good advice. Most large rental companies sell off in September/October up to mid November. New stock comes in ready for November 30th St Andrew's day.

Yes, that's excellent info! It gives me the option, possibly, to buy locally, too. I knew I came to the right place!
I haven't cruised in a few years, but I'm sure it's like falling off a bicycle, one never forgets how.
