I think you'll find that the "whole spiel" is a bunch of inaccurate romantic hogwash. As Todd has mentioned before the actual history behind the "kirking of the tartan" is much more compelling than the misinformation that is normally conveyed. If Todd doesn't chime in I'll look up the newspaper articles that describe the origin of this "Americanism"...
