Is it considered poor taste to wear a kilt in a tartan that you have no relation to?

I'm severly considering this one, but I can't find any information on the Midnight Douglas tartan. I can find information on the normal Douglas one, but not on this variation.
Any insights?

Depends on who you ask. On this site, the majority of responses will be "wear what you like". I have a personal preference to only wear what I like to call "Tartans of Significance". To me, this means those with whom I have a family relationship (MacMillan & Gordon in particular) or those I feel are appropriate based on family military affiliations (Leatherneck/USMC, USArmy, USNavy) or those based on my residence (New Mexico, USA). In addition, I will wear kilts in non-tartan fabrics.
As for what to wear - wear what you like  -- or if you want to wear what you might feel to be an "authorized" tartan, wear one of the universal tartans such as Black Watch (and many others).

As a Douglas tartan wearer in several different and some rare colorways I too am a bit intrigued by this tartan as it does not seem to appear on anybody's tartan lists, by the name of Midnight Doughlas or any other name I can find. It appears that the normal modern/ancient Douglas green band that carries the triplet light-dark-light blue stripes has been replaced by a black or profoundly deep blue instead, a first and only sighting of this for these keen Douglas tartan eyes. Also, is it me or does it appear that someone has imprinted a celtic knot pattern into that very same dark band in numerous but discontinuous places? An intriguing tartan indeed, one which I might be interested in learning more about from the standpoint of its origins, makeup (wool? and if so in what weights), and availability, if for curiosity's sake only. Brandon, can you throw us a bone?

It's a fashion tartan based loosely on the Douglas tartan. It isn't actually adiliated with any clan.
