As I went to school in Sandwich in Kent back in the 80s, every summer we had coachloads of American tourists, neck bedecked with several cameras, tartan flatcap, Hawaian shirts and tartan shorts - yes, the archetypal image of 'US tourist' in films.
Every time I hear someone say 'Gee, its just so quaint', I still cringe mightliy.

I'm not in anyway a 'USTouristophobe' or whatever the proper term may be, I have some very good friends who are American (and none of them dress that way and some have said they hate that image as well), but that image has really stuck in my mind.
