Like the others, janderson, I would recommend the Black Watch.
My own kilts are uncommon tartans (both with an African provenance), and they provoke interesting questions, but if they were non-tartan I would probably get very strange responses.

So, with absolute respect, which is your priority in this meeting: surprising the surgeon or keeping his attention on the wellbeing of your good lady?

It may not be the time to break his concentration. Perhaps in a follow-up meeting?

gordontaos, I suddenly had the urge to start singing "If I were a rich man"...

Father Bill, I think the modern kilts would be a wise option for after the surgery. I'd rather have my wife come through this with no extra risks, especially if one of them is because I wore a kilt.

As an extra piece of info, we've met with the surgeon a few times to prep for this and he is definitely a fun man. With a little extra thought, definitely prodded by the rabble, I think he will enjoy the traditional kilt when worn casually. He probably would find a contemporary kilt interesting, but no sense in risking it.

Based on an incident I had about a year ago I should have just assumed traditional as the safe bet. I was at a conference back in August 2011 where I knew the past president of the group was a kilt wearer. So I wore my black watch with a joking sporran and what came out to be about as casual a look as I could ever do (think tennis shoes and a concert t-shirt). The guy thought it was great and actually liked my sporran (it was a Night Stalker that I had sewn the groups logo onto for the weekend). His wife on the other hand wanted to hang me by my bits for "being disrespectful". It was the only time I ever started losing my patients about a kilt issue. Luckily the other kiltie stepped in before things got too heated, he told me to shut up and have another drink, and he told his wife to shut up and that I was not being disrespectful but being more modern than her family. Oh she was pissed at him the rest of the weekend. She didn't speak to me when I wore my x-kilt at this years convention, but the kiltie had to ask where I came up with the idea for making it (which I thanked on this rabble).
