It may have been just picked for the colors, or there may have been a regimental connection with a Ferguson.
Like the REME Pipe Band, the Royal Engineers (Scottish VR) Pipe Band was the only pipe band in the Royal Engineers and wore the MacDonald of Keppoch tartan, which contained colours associated with the Corps; red, blue (and green):

Yes, I could see how that might influence the tartan choice. We are having a similar issue here with he competition for the University of Lethbridge tartan. It seems logical - but i thought that there may have been a more definite affiliation - in the same respect to the Gordon Highlanders or the Seaforth using the Mackenzie, etc.
