Going Regimental?

Am I alone in wondering what is the fascination on this website with discarding underwear? Is it a little frisson that Americans enjoy? A soupcon of naughtiness that their Pilgrim fathers denied them? Is it something about the nation that labels their underwaer "intimate apparel" or talks about toilets as "restrooms" - I mean who goes to the toilet for a rest? Perhaps it is just a simple pecadilllo that so that they can feel naughty without others knowing by not wearing underwear. Who knows but it is certainly a pervasive thread throughout this site. Historically underwear was not generally worn so it is probably correct that Highlanders a few centuries ago didn't wear any. Nowadays is a bit different, however. You could possibly be arrested for displaying your wares openly, particularly where children might be involved, so why the fascination by some here in doing so. Kilt- wearing is not a license to expose yourself, despite what some here would like to propose. So please can we not perpetuate this "commando","regimental" or whatever excuse for simple indecent exposure.

First, it's not an American thing. I know many native born Scots and Canadians that feel the same way. When I was in the military, males were not allowed to wear undergarments with the kilt, but females were required to.

Hence, "going regimental". I've been asked my many native born Scots (There are plenty in Toronto) with heavy brogues if I'm a "true Scotsman" whilst wearing the kilt. I think I know what they're asking.

It doesn't mean that you have to expose yourself. I've never worn undergarments with my kilt and never sacrificed my modesty. You learn to walk around well.

It's part of the mystique and tradition of it. It's part of what makes it not a men's skirt. The very act of wearing it, requires bravery due to the risk involved, and that makes it manly and the lassies find that sexy and us single men like that.

Exposing yourself however, is not on. So don't do it. sit modestly.

The man in this video is called Walter Cameron. He's from Scotland but now lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia and is opening a kilt making school in Halifax. See the end of the video what his answer is to the question. He says "generally a Scotsman wears nothing under his kilt".

You may agree with the Scottish Tartans authority that the tradition should be put aside, but there's no denying it is and has been a tradition. The soldiers in the UK's kilted regiments told me the same standard applied to their regiments as my own in this regard.

So Phil, rail agains the tradition if you like, but don't try to blame it on the Americans and act like it wasn't conceived and perpetuated by Scots themselves.
