It was this sort of thing that nearly drove me from this forum...then I discovered the "Ignore" feature...that combined with staying away from the THCD forum has served me well.

Gwynn, I agree with you that the poor guy was just asking for an opinion on a jacket. There are obviously a few people here who take themselves way too seriously. As they say, 'The empty can rattles the loudest'. Those responsible should take an honest look at themselves and ask what stirred up their anger and rudeness. I sincerely doubt it has anything to do with the explanations given. Jim

No idea how it might read, but I wonder if there should be a warning in the forum rules about how some members react to the idea of wearing the kilt outside of certain kilt-centric venues?
I've avoided that sort of thing by basically never asking if I should wear a kilt anywhere, since this is a kilt forum I figure it's a forgone conclusion, and being vague about the venue if I had a question about the details of an outfit. But the sad fact is that venue is just one of a list of things that I just don't bring up on this forum, to avoid the discussion.
Order of the Dandelion, The Houston Area Kilt Society, Bald Rabble in Kilts, Kilted Texas Rabble Rousers, The Flatcap Confederation, Kilted Playtron Group.

I have to say I was not impressed by the way the thread was hi-jacked. I'm not Canadian and wouldn't presume to ask IF the kilt was appropriate - it didn't even register to me that it might not be since it was the Canadian tartan.
Having re-read the original question, to then attempt to justify the behaviour with "he asked a question in an inflamatory way so deserved the response" is reminiscent of sulky children pointing at the other one and going "but he started it".
Most of the posts I see here demonstrate a level of mutual respect an desire to learn about the culture, history, and modern etiquette of wearing the kilt. This was none of those things.

Well I just spent 30 minutes of my life, time that I will never get back reading the other thread. The fella just wanted advice about jackets. Jackets! What followed that simple innocent question was nothing but a stream of self absorbed over opinionated and most unhelpful vitriol that I have ever read on this forum!
The notion that everyone has a thought about the rights and wrongs of when and where to wear the kilt is fine, however going on the all out offensive and bashing someone repeatedly with BS is at best childish and at worst a sure sign of self righteous pontification. If you weren't happy simply answering the guys questions without delving deeper into the hidden recesses of propriety in regards to kilt wearing then you should have kept your sorry traps shut! No! You weren't justified and asking whether or not he should be wearing one as a representative of the nation, it had nothing to do with the original question. No! It doesn't matter one bit that the kilt is the nation dress of Scotland as that too had nothing to do with the original question. If you can't simply stay on point without going off on your own agenda ( and you're lying if you say you didn't have one ) then you should have let your fingers rest and kept your nose out of it.
Sounds like I'm a tad cross doesn't it? It should as I am! I wore the uniform of my country for more than 2 decades, I have fought for this country to preserves it's freedoms, and help some other countries preserve theirs. I wear a kilt to cenotaph to show my love of my heritage, my country, and most importantly because I have the right to. As a veteran every time I stand at a cenotaph I'm representing my country and I must admit that when I do I look pretty darn good! People want to get all in a snit because they feel Scots national identity is being usurped. That's fine you go one ahead and feel that way, we ( meaning all nations' brothers in arms) fought to give you that right. However all those that think that, should know by now that while you don't like it, it isn't going to change. Either accept it and move on and be helpful to those that want to wear this wonderful piece of clothing, or shut it!
Tyrade over, man I feel better.

Because this thread has also triggered flags and is directly related to another thread that is now in the Cooling Off Corner, I see that this one is also headed down that path.
The moderators can only handle things so quickly and the rate of posts herein is making it difficult to keep up and sort things out.
I am also placing this in the Cooling Off Corner until the moderators have had a chance to consider and discuss.
Thank you for your understanding.
