I find this interesting. I always wear a strap with daywear and a chain with evening attire.

I have a braided leather one from Rkilts that is my "dress-up" sporran belt. I like it much better than a chain, and it is easy on the kilt.

I have the same braided sporran strap from Robert at R Kilts and wear it with all levels of formality of highland attire. Sporran chains are a pretty recent invention I believe. Sporran straps used to be the norm for all occasions.

If I was you, the only thing I'd do is invest in a pair of diced hose as they are very traditional with evening attire and much easier on the wallet than full tartan hose.

Agreed, though I have worn a strap with certain sporrans whilst in black tie before, but those occasions were few and far between.

Fair enough, it's certainly your call but I don't think the OP did anything incorrect by wearing a sporran chain with his evening attire. On the contrary, I would suggest that it's the more accepted practice for evening wear nowadays. I often advise folks that a chain is a bit too blingy for day wear.

I've seen some vintage sporrans for sale on ebay with some pretty old chains, circa WWI era which is now 100 years ago but I know some people consider this recent. I think in terms of fashion, 100 years is a very long time.

Also, some folks say sporran chains can damage the kilt. That surprises me because before I started wearing the sporran strap, I wore a sporran chain on stage jumping around with a Celtic Rock band 4 nights a week for a decade and didn't get so much as a burr on my kilt. Some folks may be using some pretty cheap rough chain.

With my figure, my day wear norm is "sporran hangers". I only wear a sporran belt when I wear a waist coat.

I do have a plain day-sporran, but given the amount of black in the tartan, it all starts to look a bit sombre if there's too much extra black with it - especially once you add in the black jacket, so I generally wear that with a chain rather than strap as well.

The feedback on sporran height is useful as well: I find that having a somewhat expansive waistline (OK, I admit it, I'm fat) means that it tends to sit at an angle tangential to the lower part of my belly if I wear it lower, whereas a little higher means it sits vertical. And outside of this forum, no-one is going to know enough to correct me :-)

It's all ready to go for another black tie dinner tonight!
