I saw a fellow in a Campbell (Black watch) kilt with purple hose and a lavender tie, looked awesome.

I agree with the others that say wear the red hose I will go further by saying don't wear a red tie but rather wear a green or blue based tie if you have one.

Good advice given. If it were me I would tone down the red hose to a more sedate claret and I honestly think a red tie would be too much. However, a tie with a red stripe would be perfect. Something like an ABF tie with blue, green and red stripes would do nicely.

Basically agree, dark hose, such as highland green with red garter ties and a red tie. Red is a strong color and too much of it can be overpowering. Just my opinion, but I never liked the look of the flashes which match my kilt.

I agree entirely. The "Forces Store" is a good source with different options to suit your budget... The ABF tie goes well with any Kilt.

What about cream colored hose? I'm limited on my color choices. I have not really got a huge selection of them to choose from...yet. I love wearing a kilt and plan on investing a lot more into the selection I have for accessories in the near future. If I did wear the cream hoses, what color tie would you suggest? My wife is ok with the cream hoses but does not have an opinion on the tie. I'm not usually a dress up in a shirt and tie kind of guy. Give me blue jeans, t shirt and boots. I don't know where to really begin on dressing the kilt up, other than looking through pictures of y'all on here and getting ideas. It's helped tremendously by the way. Just the color options are so different. I like "professional kilt wearers" opinions.

I'd go with some sort of a striped tie (repp, regimental inspired, etc) and red-based hose; whether it's tartan red, brick red, or claret, I think kilt hose in a red hue will look quite smart with the deep blues and greens of the Black Watch tartan. Also, there's nothing wrong with flashes, especially when one wears them along the lines of the Duke of Rothesay with just a wee bit of the 'flash' of colour popping out from underneath the hose turnover. Plus, I find them much more streamlined against the leg versus traditional garter ties, which tend to produce a sizeable "bulge" under the hose turnover. I can't stand that! Of course, there is an alternative/compromise with those traditional garter tie thingys that are attached to an elastic garter.

As red hose are an option, I'd definitely go with them. If you can get your hands on a striped tie, I believe you'll look just fine.
BTW, here is an excellent thread on how to dress the kilt up or down. http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...-attire-46888/

Fair enough. I just prefer garters over flashes. Each to their own, mate.

Edited to add:
I tie mine in an unconventional manner that minimises the bulge. I wrap around, tie once, then tuck twice and turn down my hose. It's not the traditional method, granted, but any more fuss is over-thinking it.

Cheers to that, my friend!
