No I'm a photographer, which means I'm usually not in photographs.

On the other hand and to add, I also wear another kind of draped clothes, from India, dhoti, because I'm also an ISKCON member (Hare Krishna). And we go out quite a lot in our dhotis. If there's anything that teaches you to be comfortable wearing a kilt it's wearing a dhoti in public (and a nice kurta, chadar etc: Krishna chic can be as heavily accessorized as Highland chic)

Some people, myself included, who are just beginning to wear the kilt are not used to wearing something they like and it getting the response that a kilt brings positive or negative. Maybe its more like "stage fright" than a fear of negative comments. Yes, self-esteem does play a role in it. I'm not the most confident person in the world. But don't throw me to the wolves just yet. The more I learn about how to where them and dress properly the better my confidence becomes.

"The less you are up on something, the more you are down on it."
My friend, I did indeed have that uncomfortable feeling for a day, maybe two. OK, maybe three. ... but pretty soon I just realized that if I wanted to wear it, then I was going to wear it, and I might as well get on with it.

"Stage Fright" might actually be a pretty good term for it!

Now, you wrote this --> "...the more I learn about how to where them and dress properly the better my confidence becomes. " --

Seriously, mate. "how to wear them"... You buckle the thing on one side. Then you buckle it on the other. Or you but the buttons through the buttonholes. Or snap the snaps. Or squeeze the velcro together, if you're wearing a contemporary kilt.. Then you put on a belt, if you're wearing a belt. That's how you wear it.

I repeat: That's how you wear it.

Again, don't make more of it than it is. There are situations where you might not want to wear a kilt, sure there are. But you're a reasonably sensible lad, you're not an aggressive jerk, so just wear it whenever your basic sensibilities say it's fine to wear it.

"Dress properly"... well, I know that some guys just really don't like it if everything isn't done "properly" according to the traditional guidelines for how dudes wear kilts. Me? I strap it on and go about my business. I mean, when I wear a tartan kilt I wear a sporran and a belt. OK, so big whoop. Put on a sporran and a belt. I sometimes wear socks up to my knees. OK, sounds good. Sometimes I wear socks pushed down, and boots. Nothing wrong with that. I happen to hate the kilt and sandals look so I don't do that.

Gray socks, blue socks, white socks. Whatever. Wear what you like. Wear it wherever you feel like it, utilizing a modicum of sensitivity...like don't wear it to someone elses wedding if you think you might take attention away from the wedding couple. Aside from that, mate....if you want to wear it, just strap the thing on and wear it.

    Cheers!

BTW, I used to play in a Klezmer band. We did a lot of gigs...concerts, "Jewish Heritage Night" at Candlestick Park (saw an SF Giants Game, and played Klezmer tunes on the food vendors square while kids from the Temple in Berkeley danced to our stuff)...bar mitzvahs...Purim parties, you name it. I think I did about half of them in a kilt. Nobody cared. Lots of people danced, though. North American Mutt Dude in a Kilt Plays Klezmer. Oy, ve!

I have to say, around here anyway, the Jewish folks know how to party.

What I meant by "learning to dress properly" is the proper etiquette that frequently mentioned here. After reading a few threads here, I clearly didn't know everything. I just want to look like I know what I'm doing. You get the idea. As of right now, I wear my kilt out for errands in the car. I usually wear a t-shirt, kilt hose, sporran, but NEVER sandals/flip flops.
