I don't think there really is anything wrong with white hose. It's just that some of the rabble don't like them. If it truly was a no-no, then the companies that make them in Scotland wouldn't make them. But that is just my opinion just like they have theirs. Only I agree I don't believe I have ever heard truly why it is a no-no.

The question has been asked and answered many times, but here is my take. White hose have come to be associated with the cheapies that are included with rentals or "complete" outfits. Wearing hose of another colour is a way of showing that one isn't a total newbie. Another move, if one wishes to wear white hose, is to get some nice ones i.e., thicker and preferably cable knit.

OC Richard's excellent suggestion that even kilted stormtroopers would wear black hose and white greaves only reinforces this idea

Ah. Ok. I was thinking that it was only reserved for pipers doing a performance or something. As I mentioned in my original post, I have no plans to wear white hose as I'm a big fan of colour (hence wearing kilts!). I'm currently bidding on some hunting socks on ebay as I like the patterned tops to them. I know that they're slightly longer than hose, but as I wear mine casually, scrunched down into some boots, longer is better.

Thanks for the information about the white hose CMcG.
