Not really Celtic rock, but can anyone confirm that the opening to Steve Earle's Copperhead Road is bagpipes? I've seen him in concert many times, but never with pipes to open the song.

Seems like most of the Paddy rock leans more towards punk or straight ahead rock. There's a band called Alestorm that's pretty metal, though they're really more pirate than celtic, and I can't tell if I'm supposed to take them seriously or not. They do a pretty rad cover of Barrett's Privateers, which is one of my favorite folksy songs.
I lump Celtic metal in with viking, folk, fantasy and pagan metal. Eluveitie, Korpiklaani, Amon Amarth, Finntroll, and stuff like that. I prefer my metal doomier and gloomier and sludgier so it's not a segment of the genre that I'm super familiar with. Spotify can totally hook you up though.
edited to add: I can't believe I forgot to mention Cruachan. Way metal, but combined with traditional tunes and instruments. Definitely check them out.

Donald, although it sounds a bit like the pipes, I think it is electric organ. Thanks, BTW, I had not listened to this song for a long time, and I am enjoying it again now.

Makes sense, thanks! Last time I saw him in concert, as he introed "when Johnny comes marching home" by talking about one of his best days was the time he got to be a Pogue for a day appearing with them in Ireland.

Love Gaelic Storm, Mother Grove, and Old Blind Dogs as well. Though, the latter is more long the lines of traditional music.

Donald,
If I am not mistaken, the opening is played on a sythesizer, programed to sound like bagpipes. Another group: Big Country did something similar in their self titled song "Big Country", except they played the tune on their guitars. The group Korn actually uses bagpies on some of their songs, but I'd hardly classify them as a "celtic rock" band.
Now, if you broaden the definiton to include modern pop/folk music, then the following two groups are definitly worth giving a listen to:
Rising Gael
The Gothard Sisters

There is a band from Texas called Cleghorne that played this year's Chicago Scots Highland Games And Scottish Festival. THEY ROCKED HARD, Highland Style. I missed Skerryvore the last time they were in town but they're coming back in a few weeks, and I hear they're pretty good.
