Traditional kilts made of heavyweight wool are suprisingly cool; wool breaths. I've never had an issue with mine whilst wearing it in warm to hot weather. I think most of the issues concerning discomfort whilst wearing Highland Dress in blistering temperatures mainly stem from the chosen accessories worn with the "tank," i.e., tweed jacket and heavy woollen kilt hose.
