Traditional kilts made of heavyweight wool are suprisingly cool; wool breaths. I've never had an issue with mine whilst wearing it in warm to hot weather. I think most of the issues concerning discomfort whilst wearing Highland Dress in blistering temperatures mainly stem from the chosen accessories worn with the "tank," i.e., tweed jacket and heavy woollen kilt hose.

Agreed. Your "tank" will be the most versatile (and durable) for all the activities in which you are planning to partake. I've worn the same kilt whilst hill-walking in the Scottish Highlands, to various Highland Games, clan gatherings, social events, and formal functions.

Sorry @creagdhubh , I have to disagree slightly. Yes, wool breathes, but there is a big difference in comfort in the Florida heat and humidity between an 8 yard tank of 16oz wool and a USA casual kilt in 13 oz PV. The heaviness of the wool and the added amount of material = much warmer garment. I wore my XMarks tartan in 13oz merino wool last Sunday to church and was comfortable, but warmer than a PV. That kilt is also a box pleat 4 yarder, so very comparable to a USAK.

Just my 2 cents from living here.

And for the OP, when I travel for a full week, I usually wear 1 for travelling and pack 2 with me. Which specific ones depends on weather at destination, expected activities, and suitcase space, for both clothes and "accessories" if I have to attend a more formal function.

My thoughts exactly.... Although Kyle's point about the accessories is very true. Woolen kilt hose (and a wool jacket let alone a waist coat) in heat and high humidity are a killer.

Two maximum. One casual for day and one slightly less casual for evening. I took 2 on holiday recently and only wore the casual acrylic. I had a casual wool one but did not go do anything to justify putting it on. That was in Scotland where it was a lot colder than where you will be. I also find that wearing the kilt sitting on top of my hips is cooler and more comfortable than traditional waist height or higher with a 2" rise above it, but you have to have one of the correct length to allow that.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

I took two kilts to Scotland, for a 20-day vacation: one was 6 yard PV, for thrashing around in, throwing, hiking or whatever. The other was a nice wool job for "looking nice" I wore it twice, once for dinner with Jock Scot. The PV thrasher got worn a lot, easily 5x what the "Nice" kilt got worn.

But then, I'm not the sort to choose to go to a fancy dinner, eh? Half our dinners were bought at the Co op or Sainsbury's and eaten on the hotel room floor, as we'd be busy hiking, or out-and-about until well after the restaurants had closed. If you're someone who lives for the next fancy restaurant or reception that you're going to, then your experience will be different. We focus on the next tree that we'll see, or the next bird, or the next bug...or the next view that we can hike to, or the next 50-foot weight for distance throw I can dish up.
