On a similar note, the difference between a kilt pleated to the sett, or to the stripe, can be dramatic...Even in the same tartan. I'm still often surprised at how different tartans look "to the stripe".
The last time I was out in my tartan kilt (to the stripe), a guy (about 18 or so) cam up to me, all excited, pointed to my pleats and aesked "How did you make it do that!?" I replied "Positive reinforcement...And spend lots of time with the kilt"..OK, he didn't get it. I explained the process, and he admitted, he'd made two of his own kilts, and had never seen one pleated to the stripe.
