While browsing some tartan websites recently, I was amazed to discover just how many different "open" and non-clan associated tartans that were. Have you looked at some of those as well?

Hey, watch it...I wear the ancient Cumming Hunting tartan, and I hope to get a modern Cumming Hunting as well someday. 8)

It looks great "in person". Don't judge a tartan by a computer-generated image, I have discovered, and each mill weaves a tartan with some variation, no matter how small.

Have you thought about the Leslie tartan, since there was a Leslie who served with the Austrian Army in the 1700's?

    Cheers,

    T.

Here's something that has often amazed me. A tartan that doesn't seem particularly special on the bolt or computer screen, sewn up into a kilt, will usually look fabulous. It's all part of the magic I guess.

On a similar note, the difference between a kilt pleated to the sett, or to the stripe, can be dramatic...Even in the same tartan. I'm still often surprised at how different tartans look "to the stripe".

The last time I was out in my tartan kilt (to the stripe), a guy (about 18 or so) cam up to me, all excited, pointed to my pleats and aesked "How did you make it do that!?" I replied "Positive reinforcement...And spend lots of time with the kilt"..OK, he didn't get it. I explained the process, and he admitted, he'd made two of his own kilts, and had never seen one pleated to the stripe.

episcopalscot, sorry for my posting, i was just mentioning my current taste. knowing that this also could change, nothing is absolute.

    thanks for the leslie tartan.

on this site they have an audio spelling of theclan names. very interesting.
from leslie i like the green modern.

as it would be the first tailormade kilt for me i guess ordering it with set pleating.

Killer, isn't it Blu? There are SO MANY great tartans out there, but even fewer are actually milled anymore. THAT'S the real trick... find the "open" tartan that you like and is actually produced!!!

If it was my money and I only had your choices Mcnice I'd go for the Ross hunting.

I would just like to add that it's allways helpful to get a swatch before you order. Then you get to see what your buying before you spend too much of your kilt fund. Most companies refund the swatch price when you place a kilt order.

    Jimmy,

Some small-scale Scottish weavers will weave a single width 8 yard length of any tartan you want, so that your kilt maker can make a kilt for you in a tartan, which is not normally produced by the larger weavers. That's how I got my kilt, and it cost me no more than a kilt made from a tartan that is woven in bulk quantities.

    mcnice...

No worries, mcnice...I should have elaborated that the Scottish Lion's graphics of the Cumming Hunting Modern & Ancient tartans are variants -- the Cumming Hunting Modern looks a lot like the MacDonald tartan.

    Cheers,

    T.
