As a rather traditional Scots Highlander and also rather long in the tooth, I would absolutely reject the advice from our American friend in consulting the bride about choice of colour, particularly as far as the kilt goes!
Basically if you have a tartan of your Clan, then that is what you marry in and I am afraid the bride has to give way on that. However, as you have no Clan then a compromise may be achieved!
As far as the kilt is concerned, buy the very best heavy weight wool kilt that you can afford and my advice is stay away from fashion tartans, with one exception, have a look at the Isle of Skye tartan. There are several district tartans that you could choose from. Pop into Chisholm's, behind the castle, would be my advice and have a chat with them. Good luck.
