Assistance required
Hi All,
Looking to get a new kilt made,
Colours I like Blue/purple/white.
Came across the "Pride of Scotland" range which is owned by Mccolls.
I have a kilt maker I use and they asked for a price of the fabric and they were charging £620 from memory for 8 yards OR they would make the kilt for £475 in heavyweight.
I then found another called "Heritige of Scotland" which I really liked but was advised against this for using as my "proper" kilt apparently they are ok for casual.
Any help would be great.
Thanks

"Heritage of Scotland" is the house tartan of the Heritage of Scotland chain of shops owned by the Gold Brothers so if you wanted that tartan you would need to deal through them. Heritage of Scotland tartan is often worn by members of the Tartan Army as it is one of the tartans available in Gold Brothers' budget range. Gold Brothers do come in for much criticism for the volume merchandising of "tourist tat" but you get what you pay for and there are different qualities of kilt within their range so there's no harm of enquiring of them as to whether a better quality kilt for formal wear is available from them in that tartan. Be sure to specify "wool" and not "acrylic" and don't settle for anything called "acrylic wool" if you want a quality kilt for special occasions.
The Heritage of Scotland is actually quite a nice tartan. I once owned a budget kilt in this tartan. I gave it away to a young lad who had not much money and wanted to wear a kilt for his wedding. I warned him it wasn't really up to the quality for wedding wear but he was planning to marry in casual rather than formal wear.

Hello Connor, to help us with suggestions can you help us by answering a few basic questions. Do you have a Clan tartan? Roughly how much do you want to spend? Are you going to require a kilt jacket, sporran etc.. Are you intending to wear your kilt to smart functions? Are you going to wear the kilt at less smart events like rugby matches? The answers will give us a clue and help us with our advice.

Excellent guidance. The Heritage Of Scotland, Pride Of Scotland and Honour Of Scotland are all very similar--or even virtually identical--patterns. I have the Honour version in an economy kilt of the aforementioned "acrylic wool" (which is of course a contradiction of terms). It's a good versatile tartan and the material is tightly woven twill with a durable, "hard" finish to it that makes the kilt ideal for casual wear, and I'm sure any of the three tartans in well-dyed, premium quality woolen cloth would really make a beautiful dress kilt indeed.

Good for you Conner. You'll learn that you can edit an original post without duplicating. If you could send a photo of your granddad's kilt (even you wearing it) that will help in our assisting you further. I stress again, look to the wishes of the bride to be and her choices of colors for the wedding.

As a rather traditional Scots Highlander and also rather long in the tooth, I would absolutely reject the advice from our American friend in consulting the bride about choice of colour, particularly as far as the kilt goes! Basically if you have a tartan of your Clan, then that is what you marry in and I am afraid the bride has to give way on that. However, as you have no Clan then a compromise may be achieved!
As far as the kilt is concerned, buy the very best heavy weight wool kilt that you can afford and my advice is stay away from fashion tartans, with one exception, have a look at the Isle of Skye tartan. There are several district tartans that you could choose from. Pop into Chisholm's, behind the castle, would be my advice and have a chat with them. Good luck.

Thanks.
My bride to be does not mind what kilt i wear aslong as I like it.
So any suggestions on a tartan similar to Pride of Scotland, reason being i can have it made very cheap by a local kilt maker if i can get the wool but they want a crazy price for it. I was not set on Pride of Scotland so looking for something similar.
Again price is not an issue but I am not just wanting to throw money away if I can get it made FOC and just pay for the wool.
Not a fan of the Isle of Skye Tartan, its nice but not for me.

Have you checked out the Marton Mills range of tartans. It's very extensive (I'd recomend their heavyweight Jura cloth) and it is cheaper than some of the other mils. I'll whisper the fact that it's English made
The Kilt is my delight !
