Depends on the event. If we are at a non-clan specific event, such as a Burns Dinner or SCD, she wears her own clan tartan (MacKay). If we are at one of an Elliot or Donald clan function she wears that clan tartan. We haven't attended a MacKay function yet, so that issue hasn't come up yet, but I would probably wear either Gunn (neighboring clan) or Morrison (who based their "new" tartan on the MacKay tartan).
Yes, I know we should only "belong" to one clan, but where is the fun in that?

The Missus is a Keith, and wears it proudly. She'll also wear my Clark(e), Colquhoun, Crawford, Dalziel, Gray, and Stewart of Appin. Thinking of having a kilt done in ancient Keith soon.

My wife is a Burns , she wears Campbell and she has a Burns scarf. Last year I purchased her fabric for a Douglas arisaid in the weathered pallet.

Another Canadian response; my better half (English/Swedish heritage) chooses to wear Maple Leaf tartan (though last month I was tickled when she wore a Crawford scarf :-)

Since I am not American, nor is my wife, I'll not respond.

I hope I didn't overstep the OP's question by adding my North American perspective as a Canadian
