I don't care much for Braveheart for the obvious reasons. Rob Roy (1995) is pretty good and the costuming is a bit more accurate.

As a past professor of history, I often used hollywood movies in classes. After discussing a time period, I showed the films and had the students discuss what was accurate and what was not so accurate. It was a great way to get students to think more critically about popular depictions of the past. Additonally, good or bad, the movies often did help inspire an interest in history for some who were uninterested before. Often my favorite films to show were musicals. You would be surprised at how much song lyrics reflected historical periods, in general, and the social issues of the time, in particular. Most students, especially the males, tried to act uninterested in the musicals, but the majority were tapping their feet along with the beat before they were done.

Hope you all have a good weekend ahead.

By a fortuitous coincidence, I just discovered that a wedding venue that I will be attending kilted is simultaneously giving a showing of Braveheart, along with a kilt contest. I can certainly agree that the movie does bring interest to the kilt based on that alone.

If you want to learn more about the history of Scotland and William Wallace, I would see A History of Scotland by Neil Oliver from the BBC.
