Jim, you are dead right about those tiny little things they call tams in the British Army nowadays.
The berets worn by non-Scottish regiments might even be smaller, but they are no less a silly joke.
When I was in my regiment, I noticed mainly two styles of tam: the broader style that came in in 1915, and the smaller one, introduced as the Second World War got into its stride, made that way to reduce the amount of cloth used.
My green tam was specifically intended to be in the 1915 style.
But I definitely did not want it in khaki, as I had had enough of the old South African Army (and had no time at all for the new one post-1994).
Your preference for khaki is understandable, though, since you served in a decent army (for all that the Scottish element has been reduced almost to its bare bones).
You mentioned that your wife is from Scottsdale – it set me wondering how Scottish the population was there, and her family in particular.
Jock, now that you have made yourself clear in this matter, I find myself in complete agreement with you.
Regards,
Mike
