I think ancestrycom is a tool, and like any tool, it does not stand well alone. I used it along with some information from my family, and combining it with information from the internet. I was able to trace my name back to 1600 by using the three tools I mentioned.
Also of Note: For Scotland, you will hit a dead end unless you have info from family/friends. This is because lots of the Scottish records were destroyed by England in an attempt to weaken clans.
