I may be an anomaly here, I have never purchased a kilt. My first was a great kilt for AWI reenacting. Next I made my first tailored kilt in Blackwatch, followed quickly by another in a generic tartan. My next one was in MacLennon modern woven by the Pendleton Mill in Oregon. I have three active use kilts now; a hybrid made using the remains of the lasttime kilt my mom made, the newest wool kilt I made at Kilt Lamp and a canvas X-Kilt. I am currently planning to build two more box pleated self colored kilts. But your mileage may vary.

My first kilt was a tank in my family tartan (Stuart of Bute). I have since bought several kilts of different tartans. I also have sever styles of utility kilts. For general knock around kilts I like the ones from StillwaterKilts, especially their wool variants. For more formal kilts I use Rocky at USAKilts.

    Interesting.

To be honest, I prefer cheap kilts in bright tartans to the formal suit kilts, they just look so bland and boring, no colour in them, like, at all. What's even worse in my opinion, is the solid-colour black kilts.

    For example...

For my first kilt I went to a Celtic festival in Phoenixville where USA Kilts used to be. My friends convinced me to at least try one on so I selected the Irish National tartan they didn't because the guy was Black and the woman was Jewish and didn't think it was appropriate (not that I care... I've been telling my Black friend that the sistas seem to appreciate a kilted guy). Anyway, I declined to get one at that time.
Well, after lunch and a couple of beers they convinced me that I should reconsider, so I did, and they still had one in my size, so the rest is history.
I'm expected to wear one when I visit my older Jewish friend, and I keep working on the guy to try it. A 511Tactical was a hit at the local Juneteenth celebration though.

I inherited my first from my benefactor - no selection necessary!
