Quality Sporrans for less money

I love Nicoll Brothers sporrans! Top quality.

A bummer for us USA buyers is that there are always nice sporrans available from UK sellers, the trouble being that they're sealskin.

Here's an Evening Dress sporran, very low price, with the typical Made In Scotland Real Leather gold oval stamp, but it's bovine and therefore fine for posting to the USA.

Here's a sporran with a stamp I've not seen, Roberts Of Trongate. It could be the maker, or perhaps a retail shop. This sporran type was the least expensive basic sporran offered in the old catalogues.

Now this one is no super bargain, at $150 (but still perhaps half of what it would cost new) by L&M Highland Outfitters of Nova Scotia.

It's an interesting hybrid style, an ordinary pocketlike Day Sporran with flap, but with the flat leather tabs of a Hunting Sporran on the front. Too bad they didn't use that nice pebbled leather for the whole thing, IMHO the smooth shiny leather front detracts from the look of it. And I would have much preferred it in brown.

I clicked on a link to one of the sporrans and read the description. It was clear that English was not the writer's first language, so I'd be willing to bet that they're Pakistani (or at least not Scottish made).

That said, it comes with a "Ten Years Rust Free Warranty," which would certainly put my mind at ease. There's nothing worse than a rusty sporran!

I clicked on a link to one of the sporrans and read the description. It was clear that English was not the writer's first language, so I'd be willing to bet that they're Pakistani (or at least not Scottish made).

That said, it comes with a "Ten Years Rust Free Warranty," which would certainly put my mind at ease. There's nothing worse than a rusty sporran!

LOL! I sat up until 2am to put in my bid. I had a max of $25.76, if I remember correctly. I was prepared to go up to $35. I was shocked that the bid didn't get driven higher. Hubby is happy though...looking forward to getting it. We will be ordering his kilt once we head back home in April (we are snowbirds in southern GA right now).

Here's a vintage sporran that shows its age, a bit tatty but still serviceable, a classic early-to-mid 20th century brown leather Day sporran for little money

And next from a maker not often seen, Robincraft Selkie, also with a sgian. When I worked at a Highland Outfitter in the 1980s we were a William Scott & Son Edinburgh stockist, but we would receive brochures from time to time from other Scottish sporran makers, and I well recall looking through the Robincraft one. At the time we noticed that they broke the mould a bit, striving for some distinctive patterns at a time when nearly all the makers were following a set canon of standard styles.
