Same, but wrapped in paper as suggested by the manufacturer...also mine is goat, not horse.

I hang mine, figuring that the hair will remain straighter over time. When laying flat, it can develop a wavy shape.

Mine was made in 1911 so no way I could get direction from the maker, but the idea of wrapping in paper makes good sense to me.

Make an open ended cardboard box the length of the sporran.
Cut a letterbox opening one side where the strap is attached to the sporran.
Lay the box on the table with the opening uppermost.
With the sporran face down, feed in the straps into the box and exit them at the opening.
Pull in the sporran until completely covered and hang by the straps.
This was demonstrated to me by an old ex SG piper and now all my hair sporrans have cases.
Good for travelling with as well though you might be making more than one due to rough usage!!

Either is fine, but protect it from things brushing against it. A long paper bag is good, as it's breathable. If hanging, reinforce a slot at the top with strapping tape to keep it from ripping.

As a bit of a preservationist, I would suggest that any paper that is to come in contact with your sporran be archivist quality acid free paper/card stock.

L&M is a highly-regarded sporran maker and they offer something they describe as a "fleece sleeve" for protecting your hair sporran. They claim it will keep the hair straight when the bag is stored or carried in luggage.
