It's such a pity that this direction was not followed by later civilian owners of these, and some goat hair sporrans. So many old ones have been 'tidied up by cutting straight across the bottom'.

You're dead right..!
The sporrans end up looking like unfortunate kids whose mothers cut their hair, leaving the fringe too high and straight.
But at least the child's hair can grow back...
