I am certainly no fashionista, but I do know you can't put crazy on crazy.
I love bright colors and "loud" clothing. I have an extensive collection of Hawaiian shirts.
But once I saw a kid wearing a Hawaiian shirt, plaid Bermuda shorts, and checkered Vans shoes, I knew I never wanted to be THAT guy. It was blinding.
Tartan, by nature, has many colors and a busy pattern. Thus you can't in good taste pair it with a Hawaiian shirt or something contrastingly busy with many colors. Thus I have had to acquire some solid color, comparatively boring shirts to pair with my kilts.
I expect hose should follow a similar strategy.

Just so you know, modest , I repeat, modest patterned Tattersall shirts work very well with the tartan kilt. Many here in Scotland happily wear them with the kilt very successfully. Personally, I would avoid button down collars though.

It's an odd combination that actually works very well. I have a few tattersall shirts for semi-formal non-casual outings.

It's a classic and, dare I say, safe combination, if that's what you're after. The same goes for other patterns--PoW check, herringbone, even a fine gingham or houndstooth. Hang them all in the same section of the closet, and you'll never need to give a thought to all this matching business when you reach in and pull one out.
I keep my hose rolled up together in a small chest at the back of my closet. The only thought I have to give them is whether I've picked out two of the same before I put them on!

After reading all this I suppose I'm a bit droll when it comes to the hose. Lovat green goes with the MacKenzie Modern, Bison goes with the MacKenzie Weathered and red* goes with either. And that's the extent of it.
* Not claret or the bright, so-called "kilt red". Just red, like the stripe in the tartan.

Even if I do have kilt hose in different colours, by far the most worn are charcoal; they go with all my different tartans - and shirts - and they don't take attention from my kilts.

I was wearing charcoal hose, and I tend to avoid white/cream, but these amazing hose showed up in Facebook Marketplace at a very reasonable price, and I was quite taken by them. From what I could find, the company is a small one that uses local wool and recruits local knitters to produce their products. I’m rather tickled to know that these hose were knitted by “Mrs. Jarvis.” Any small inconsistencies just show that they were knitted by hand rather than machine. I couldn’t resist.
