Hi Joe,
I've been to the highland games/Tattoo at Estes park three times so far and I plan on going again this year. Usually people book their motel rooms a year in advance. However, I think you'll be able to find a place to roost if you start looking now. There is a website that gives you an Idea of what to expect here's the link http://www.scotfest.com/index.php?info=1740
Thank you for the advice on ticket sales
I will go ahead and buy the scotch tasting tickets well in advance as I've never been to one and it sounds interesting.

This will be my first time attending this event
How far in advance do I need tickets and hotel reservations?
You can buy tickets to most anything the day of (with the exception of the Sctoch tasting: that fills up by the beginning of August). Hotel rooms need to be booked *much* earlier-sometimes a year. If you don't mind moving dowm the canyon a few miles (6 to 8) you can find some nice, moderately expensive cabins and non-chain motels.
Bryan...or you can pitch a tent in RMNP-they keep the toilets open untill Octoberin the Moraine Park campground...
