The most insane thing I've seen is people moving to the desert climate and putting in grass lawns like they left behind back east. A complete waste of way too much water. If they wanted that bright green lawn they should have stayed back east.

The dandelions, clover, etc. merely add a bit of texture to an otherwise dull bit of green. And I refuse to fight something that will just be reseeded from my neighbors' yards!

As to leaves, those wander in from the neighborhood- I only have two cedars, so the wind is my leaf-blower.

3 years ago we reduced our yard to 400 sq ft of sod and the rest as natural as possible. Takes longer to get the mower out than to mow it! Good part is that the homeowners assasination, I mean association, has it written in the rules and regs that as much of the yard be natural as possible. We seem to have more deer, fox, racoon, cayote, bear etc in our yard than anyone else. And we only have a 0.49 acre lot! Love it

Several years ago we landscaped a yard that was located up in the mtns. Well, the local wildlife treated it as their own private buffet. Next, the yard was fenced in. This kept out the deer and wild hogs. It did not stop the bears, chipmonks, squirrels, possums, racoons and others. The homeowners surrenderd and adopted a natural look.
