First experience kilted with freezing rain

Hope it's nothing serious with your car. Still I'm sure it could be worse, must've been dozen of cars in the ditch with all this freezing rain. Me, I went to work, got a call that school buses wer cancel so decided to take a snow day. Luckily it's a holiday in the States, nothing shipping, so I could leave. Still it took me twice as long to get home.

GOOD DAY, Last year I BW pipe band with the WG band, (they were on a natinal tour) and boy it was cold one that night. Here in eastern Kansas we often get a few days in Jan. that cold air rushes in from the north, it will get down to about the low teens and around zero at night. Well I drove downtown to the hall, I had to park about two blocks from the hall in a underground garage. I knew that it was very cold outside (about 5 above)
so I dressed warm ie wool kilt hose, a wool under shirt another dress shirt, wool sweater, top with a barn coat and with my SWK Black Stewart. When I got inside I found that I was over dressed, I felt too hot and had to check the coat I almost felt like pulling my sweater off at intermission but went outside to cool off. It was the kilt and all the other wool, there was other gents there that had kilts and they seem to be all warm when guys in suits and topcoats were complaining about the weather. I do remember that my ears felt the cold air, guess that I should of had a hat, but you cann't beat a good kilt when it's chilling outside.

I think there's an interesting lesson for the ladies there, too. How many times have you heard them complain that it's too cold for a skirt? Well, perhaps the (relative) cheapness and flimsiness of most women's skirts compare to a handmade kilt is the real problem!

Makes me feel somewhat better at the cost of even a "cheap" kilt, actually...

True but I haven't seen many women wearing wool kilt hose either.

Good on you lad! Around here its been ice and snow with the lows at about -5 to -10 (F) and highs around +10 or so. I've been kilted every day. Last Friday I as out around campus shooting some snow photos for about two hours all snug in my 5 yard wool kilt. One young man walked by and said "you must be freezing - why not wear pants?" I said - "I'll think about it when it gets cold." he smiled and said "I guess its true, real men do wear kilts"

Maybe I'm more sensitive to cold then you guys. (Lord knows my 10 year old runs around in a t-shirt on days when I'm in a sweater.) I wore my Workman to an evening theatrical performance held in an industrial warehouse-like venue where everyone kept their overcoats and gloves on. Standing around beforehand things were OK, but sitting down on those little folding chairs my thighs were plenty cold! Really great show though, Romeo & Juliet, a fire ballet Got a couple of nice comments about the kilt, but I kind of felt like I was suffering for my art.

Well I got the car back, water pump, thermostat, and a few other things, anyway $800.00 later I at least have my car back on the road, but the new kilts and accessories I wanted are going to have to wait now.

Boy I hate when that happens - I just suffered through about $900 worth of water pump, radiator, hoses, and belts. Needless to say I'm on a new schedule for the next kilt!

First off, all I can say is that I am amazed that no one has arrived at the reason why your not as cold as expected/thought.

There is more cloth wrapped around your waist, hips , groin and anything else above yer knee's than you would have when wearing a pair of trousers. The only thing exposed is yer knee caps and they are pure bone, so the cold has no effect to the same extent as thick meaty flesh on yer thighs.

I never could figure out why the birds wore tights.

You are of course quite right, bout being warmer with 8yrds of 16oz wool wrapped round you, it was just the first time I had experienced it, and thought I would share it wth the group.
