Australian National Tartan
This article appeared in the Scottish Banner recently.
The article got the name of the tartans' author wrong, Betty 'Campbell' is actually Betty Johnstone. I spoke with her today and she is sending down a bunch of caps, Tams, ties and scarves in this tartan so we can sell them at the launch of the Tasmanian Branch of the Celtic Council of Australia, St.Paddys Day.
This will be a tremendous opportunity for us, it will be the first time the tartan has been seen in Tasmania, it's also a very nice looking tartan.

I kept reading down the article hoping there would be a pic at the end and I wasn't disappointed. That is a fine looking tartan Graham, congratulations.

That is a gorgeous tartan! I have no doubt that it will be taken in well.

Australian tartan
There is also another Australian tartan, which was designed in 1984 by one John Reid:

The Royal Australian Regiment's pipe band wears this tartan, if memory serves me.
Has this new tartan been officially recognised by the Australian government?
Cheers,
Todd

Here is the original Australian tartan Todd is referring to:

I like this one better, honestly. It could be because it was modelled after the MacQuarrie tartan (many historic ties between the MacQuarrie clan and Australia), and both because of the very unusual and beautiful colors.
I can understand why some might want a more brightly colored tartan to wear, but I really like the sandy tones of the original Australia tartan.

Matt, I know this tartan well. I was with the Pres. of the Australian Scottish Assoc. at a fair where he was promoting the tartan. This gentleman does not approve of the new one.
Frankly, I don't like it and wouldn't wear it. In reality it appears much lighter than the image, just doesn't appeal based only on colour, not history.
The new one has been endorsed by the Federal Government.
I'll post some piccies after I get my hands on it in a few days.
I feel a new kilt coming on!
