    Help Finding a Clan Association

Not quite sure if this should go here or not, but it seems the best fit. Mods feel free to move it.

So. I'm having difficulty locating anything relating to my clan (variously Ogilvie or Ogilvy). No website, nothing. I'm wondering if there's anything akin to what, say, the clan Donald has (both an organization located in the UK and in the US). Any help would be great.

I don't believe the Ogilvies have a clan society; Matt mentions trying to find a society web site for the Ogilvies, but he could not find one.

    Cheers,

Crud. Well, that confirms my suspicions. Thanks much for the prompt response.

There's still a chief, though: The Right Honourable Earl of Airlie. He's a member of the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs.

Also, the Odom Genealogical Society in Georgia lists the Clan Ogilvy as having their achives in their depository; you might contact them and see if the society is still around:

    Ogilvie Mailing list

Have you taken a look at the Clan Ogilvie mailing on RootsWeb? Here are their archives. If you find nothing about an association, perhaps you could post a query: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/CLAN-OGILVIE

Is Ogletree a variant of this surname, or another name all together?

Thanks. I'll have to look into that. As for Ogletree, it is a sept of the clan Campbell:

Actually, the Ogilvies and Campbells had a rather heated feud, so I wonder how that worked out...

    Edit:

Well, now, here's a question. Is the clan name Ogilvie or Ogilvy? I've never known, actually. The chief's name is Ogilvy, but the clan name a frequently listed as Ogilvie. It'd be good to know.

Thanks for the info on the Ogletrees. I will pass it on to my Ogletree cousins.

The difference between Ogilvy and Ogilvie is inconsequential. Before dictionaries, that is, before the late 1700's/early 1800's there was no such thing as correct spelling (or even correct definitions.) People spelled words as they sounded to them. In fact it didn't really catch on until well into the 19th century with widespread literacy, and (in the US) with Noah Webster and his dictionary. Our obsession with precise spelling is a very recent development in the history of the written word.

I have a copy of deed of one of my ancestors from the 1750's in colonial Virginia. The clerk (presumably the same clerk) spelled his name one way in the body of the deed, but copied his signature using a second spelling, and indexed it yet a 3rd way.

Unfortunately there isn't any kind of online presence.
They are recognised by Lord Lyon as an official clan and have their own distinct tartan, (Which can be found here) but the only groups I know are small, local ones.
