    You certainly did the right thing. By wearing trousers to the funeral you may in fact have disappointed your Italian in-laws. Doing that you didn’t give them a chance to talk about your kilt wearing or even blame you.

    Wear the kilt when you are among people whom you like and who like you.

    Yes that was the right thing to do. Maybe that will help your relationship with the inlaws.

    I agree with everyone else here that it was the right thing to do. You were being respectful at an occasion that deserved respect.
    That doesn't meant you're not still a proud kilt wearer.

    You did good > but on the lighter side if you played the pipes you could have worn your kilt and been part of the funeral.
