Yeah the magnets are real strong and not easy to separate but don't appear to crush the fabric. Personally, I think this is better than using a pin pushed thought the fabric. If the kilt pin gets caught, it is more likely to just slide on the material and the magnets stay attached.

Iwas thinking that the backing magnet could be sewn inyo a little pouch with a pull tab on it for added leaverage. Although to be honest I was going to use one magnet and a steel disc, never thought about a second magnet, but was concerned with possible rust stains. BEEDEE you are a genious AND a first rate craftsman.
