    Excellent thread!

Reminds me somewhat of the time I awoke from a alcohol induced hibernation with complete and total one-ness with the universe (and the toilet bowl) and received the meaning of life in the context of Put-Put Golf (Rainforest theme).

I regret to inform, that every witness to this unfortunately was without a pen so the insight has been lost somewhere in Panama City, FL in the Admiral Inn room 228.

You are right about the symbol. Perhaps it's ok to overload H. C is overloaded: it's used in SI for coulombs and Celcius temperature. We could make it °H? Degree of Hamishness? Hr? Hamish rank. Hi? Hamish index. Ham? Simply Hamish. Would need to keep the H though.

    Other suggestions?

Or, how about we just figure the total yardage of cloth in all the kilts owned....like Ham would have over a quarter mile of kilts...if unsewn and laid end to end...

Or, we could go by weight. Stack them all up on a large scale somewhere and weigh in.

Figure the yards per year or pounds per year of kilts bought.

Well, I had wondered about this. My inital thoughts were that for tanks, there would be a factor for yardage, a factor for cloth weight, and a factor for goodness of construction.

The yardage factor would also need to have some correction for size of wearer. A full-on tank for my 40-in waist is about 9 yards. This would give me a slight advantage over smaller people, so needs factoring out.

For cloth weight it's simpler (heavier weight = higher rating).

For quality, perhaps I could propose another unit of kilt quality - the Tewksbury - a kilt built exactly to Barb's method as per AoKM (1st edition) would score 1T. Lesser kilts would be rated in milliTewksburys.

For casuals, I think we'd need another measure. Perhaps someone would like to think up a definition for the Ashton as a unit?

Oh Ron! This is such neat idea! If Hamish's collection were all trad 8 yarders, (which we know they're not, but bear with me) you'd be right, at 0.354 miles!

    Best regards

Go for it! The website excel sheet is neat, and a java app would be neater. If you could implement some scheme where those that with to make their score public could do so, that wuld be neater still.

I guess the ultimate would be to write a custom extension for vBulletin, and have Hank and the mods adopt it. But this would be a long way down the track. (grin!)

    Best regards

The honor of seeing the standard adopted should be yours. It is after all your brainchild.

I must now fade away as the shearing season is upon me and there will be no free time til July.

Well, 22 kilts in about 20.5 months for me (although the rate has slowed way down), is about 13.4 per year. So a Hamish rating of 1.39?
