I had no idea anyone was paying that close attention. Indeed, sir, you have identified me most exceedingly precisely. But, er, you have missed one essential fact. I have never entirely grown up, despite my age, and as a consequence, I love the Disney Channel exceedingly well.

Indeed, my humble television set, here in the dorm, is rarely tuned to but three channels... Disney, History, and Science Fiction.

I have seen much in my time of violence, of unkindness, and of all those ills which are the estate of man. I find it refreshing to watch shows which are innocent and pure, as indeed are those of the Disney Channel.

And I have been reading Jane Austin, so please excuse my stilted language. I do find that it comes on when reading her, or Anthony Trollope, or even Mr. P. G. Wodehouse.

Based on what I know of christianity, it is more up to the person to be "dressed appropriately". I am unsure of other religions (and to be honest, not to sure about Christianity) clothing requirements.
It depends, in either Christianity or Judaism, on the customs of the congregation. (Granted, my experience of Christianity is limited to occasional visits, but Christian friends confirm this.) Those customs, in turn, tend to reflect those of the community, and they change with time. When my daughter was Bat mitzvah, over a decade ago, our Reform congregation here in Las Vegas, was quite casual (though not for Benei Mitzvot). Recently it has been getting more and more formal and my wife gets quite unhappy if I try to leave off my coat, though I can still get away with tossing it over the back of the pew once settled. There is an exception for retired men who can get away with a guyabera shirt ("Mexican/Philippine Wedding Shirt"). Nothing written down, just current custom, enforced by men's wives. Comments from Christian friends suggest that there has been a similar trend in their congregations' customs. I've a vague impression from casual asides by colleagues here at UNLV that matters are similar for Muslim and Buddhist coingretations hereabouts.

See what too much reading of this forum does to you? You develop out a mental picture and profile of others without ever realizing it. Or maybe that's just me. I remember almost everything I read and the CPU thats my brain can't help organizing and correlating the info.

Well that I can understand. My own mantra is that growing old (or older) is mandatory, but growing up is optional and I am not interested in that option! I too enjoy the shows on Disney, but am not sure I would have stumbled across them but for my daughters. Raven and Suite Life are other favorites of mine.

To expand on the topic, it LARGELY depends on the congregation. Working for an Architectural firm that 85-90% of our business is designing and building churches, I see a full range. Also depends on the location of the church. There is a church in the East Texas Piney Woods that requires a shirt under overalls, but that's about the only restriction. Then there is large metropolitan churches where you go to Church dressed to impress. All men in smart neat suits and women done up with large hats. One church on the east coast I worked on, required an abnormally large coat closet. That was to accommodate women's fur coats in the winter. They would COMPLETELY dress to the nines so to speak.

You want interesting church stories, I have them.

There was a time when most would wear their best for Sunday. I remember in England my Mother would dress us up to go to the doctor or dentist any occasion like that and this was the norm! She even made me wear a suit and tie on the pane when we emigrated to Canada (I was ten in 1976) Never had seen a pair of jeans till then. People dress far more casually now. Perhaps even, too much.

See, dressing to present your best appearance for the occasion I understand, and that may be my point (if I have one 1!). What I wear to worship whatever god(God) I decide should be my choice. What I detected earlier was others defining what was appropriate for somebody else to wear to church. That is what I object to.

But we wear kilts! We take more time getting dressed, even if we're dressing own. We stand out from the norm because of the kilt and we do tend to dress a little more refined than others. When was the last time you saw a kilted gent looking like a slob. As far as church goes, I'm not the type but when I go I'm dressed better than normal out of respect for the institution. In a synagogue I wear a yarmulke even hough it's not my custom and perhaps I don't fully understand the history behind it. I do understand that one must cover his head although they don't enforce this amongst Christians, I do it out of respect. Somebody else's house (of worship) I'll follow their customs or rules. I respect you and I'll respect your choices.

I had to explain to our recent guest, an exchange student from France, that I still get dressed (jacket and tie) to fly anywhere...she was wearing her sweats for the flight back home. I guess I'm just a person stuck in the sixties...traveling used to be an event and you dressed accordingly.

Everytime I go to the ball park I think of all of the generations before that attended games wearing suits, ties and those straw hats...I especially think of that when I see some slob with his @$$ hanging outta his baggy @$$ shorts.

I wore the kilt to a closing night reception for the exchange students and had to explain to someone that not only was this my "dressing up" option but it's the only thing that I have that's between jeans and a t-shirt and a suit...some of you guys go on about how much you dislike wearing jeans; I can't stand "dockers" type pants.

I would think that anyone would be honored to have one of us attend an event kilted...it show that we care enough to wear our very best.

    Best
