"Clothing, not a costume!"
That's the mantra to bear in mind. Do you need a kilt belt? Do you need a sporran? Do you need hose? If so, hose up, or hose down? Do you need flashes?
When the kilt was worn as a daily garment, I'll bet it was worn with whatever the guy had on hand and felt comfortable with. I'm in favor of continuing that.

That's exactily right, IMHO. If you happen to attend a celtic festival or Highland Game where a person or group appears in the ancient great kilt and period dress, you will find a lot of variation in dress. Footwear can be anything from leather wrapped and tied on with thongs (long leather laces...not the undergarment). Flashes were used to hold up the knit hose...no elastic at the time. And the belt was long as it was how the great kilt was kept on the body...no sewn pleats.

Huh! You beat me to asking the same question, Trefor!
A plea: (NOT aimed at you Trefor, as far as I know) PLEASE, never wear socks with sandals - ever! I once allowed myself to be photographed with that combination (not the undergarment!!!) on my feet and, yes, I was kilted at the time. It should never have happened. I was caught unawares and should have known better, but that photo haunted me for several years. It appeared on all manner of websites - one of which was devoted solely to the crime of wearing socks with sandals! So, don't do it. To do so is to commit one of the greatest menswear faux pas of all time. It is not a fashion thing - it quite simply just looks awful !

Reason: The plea.

Wouldn't normally do it!
Bless you my son. You are truly forgiven ............................ but don't EVER do that again!!
Sandals and kilts, yes. Sandals, kilts and socks, NO!
