the shorter jacket makes all the difference! Much more appropriate at that length. You might even be able to add cuffs with the offcut material.

I think that jacket would look great cut off like you doctored the photo to. Cuffs like Cloves suggested are a maybe in my mind. The Epaulets... I would say no. I think with that particular jacket you should leave the shoulder plain. Just my opinion, of course.

I think the doctored photo looks great.
it shouldn't cost much for an alterations tailor to fix it up for you, but maybe since it was only a fiver you might have a go yourself.
    I'm told it's fairly easy.

Second photo is the one to go with. I'm looking for a jacket to do just the same thing.

Here's Alan H's step-by step instructions on how to modify the jacket. Try it yourself or give the instructions to a tailor.

I was gonna pump my instructions again, but you did it for me!

David Dalgliesh has got this down to an art form, so check with him, too.

The jacket looks like a very candidate for a kilt jacket conversion. It is very similar to one I had done. Take a look at these before and after pictures. :

Thanks again for all your constructive comments, encouragement and links. I think I probably will have a go at it. It's that first drastic sawing off that might need a wee dram of Dutch courage. No, maybe best do it sober.
Meanwhile, I've won a pale green Argyle jacket, my size, on eBay, for £25 (!!!)
It's turning out to be a super week.
