That's probably why so few of those smart velvet dress jackets have survived to the present day - ruined by ciggy ash .
Seriously interesting posts and pictures Phil and Todd.

For the 1900 view, showing the view at the start of the era, I'd HIGHLY recommend:
The Kilt & How to Wear It by The Hon. Stuart Ruaidri Erskine (1901)

Other ones I find interesting are:
All About Your Kilt by Bob Martin
For the time before that:

The photos are very interesting, there is not a pair of Ghillies in sight. The only thing I saw resembling Ghillies is worn by the woman in the long skirt near the bottom of the STA website pictures.
The patent leather shoes with the buckles must be almost impossible to find today. I have seen a pair worn with formal dress, but I haven't any idea how old they were.

Buckle shoes! Expensive, but gorgeous:

Those pictures are wonderful. I particularly like the fellow in the "day dress." Very nice.

Warning.
I bought a pair of those some months ago in an Ebay auction. About the only good thing I can say about them is that the seller agreed to take them back and refund the cost of postage. They were incredibly flimsily made. The seams had loose threads, the buckles were tarnished even though new, the leather straps were so stiff that they already had permanent bends, and the lining of the soles were put in haphazardly and already coming out. They were also at least a size smaller than advertised. The patent leather did have a nice shine.
There is a thread here in which they are mentioned.

Day wear is very nice. I have jacket and westcote, which I wear to business socials and church - always a hit.

It has long been my belief that the Ghillie brogues we see everywhere thesedays are a comparitively modern and, in my opinion, unattractive creation which I will not wear.
