Is MacKenzie considered universal?

One guy was on here about 2 years ago forbidding everyone from wearing the McKenzie Tartan , I wear it because my Great Grandfather was a sergeant in the Ross-shire buffs, and served in India in the mid late 1800s the Buffs wore the McKenzie Tartan and I sometimes wear a Dress Mckenzie 8 yard from Hendersons of Stirling.

I too am a MacKenzie. My grandmother was born a MacKenzie. Right now I own a cheap basic MacKenzie kilt that i got for about 40 bucks, but I too intend on buying the Weathered MacKenzie here soon. I think it looks nice.

As for the original question, I do think that the MacKenzie has kind of become a universal tartan, but like any tartan, i think you should buy what you like, and just treat whatever you decide to buy with respect.

When I saw that Jerry offered the weathered in a standard line, I just about needed a bucket for the drool. Now I'm just waiting to order until the brown leather nightstalker sporrans come out, and I'll place my order. Of course when I do that, I think I'll also order a black leather nightstalker sporran and matching standard nightstalker tartan kilt.

Let me know how it turns out. I was a bit miffed when I saw stillwater offering the weathered, but only because I went through a 3-4 month ordeal to get my weathered MacKenzie from Scotland. Ah well, I am quite fond of the 13 oz Lochcarron wool so I am ok now (breathe in, breath out....repeat..).

I'll probably have my SWK Weathered MacKenzie before Xmas, as I intend to wear to Disney. I'm planning on writing a review of SWK once my Thrifty MacLaren gets here sometime this week, and once I get a leather nightstalker, and standard kilt.

I know that Frugal Corner offers MacKenzie in both their 16 oz and 13 oz kilt models.

The weathered MacKenzie from SWK is the reason I posted the question. I love weathered tartans in general, and the MacKenzie looked like a dandy one. Although my clan associations are Douglas/MacGregor, I can't resist a weathered tartan.

Mackenzie is one of the dress-hire favourites here and I have seen it worn by many non-Mackenzies at weddings and other formal events. It makes a welcome change from Red Stewart or Dress Gordon which are the other standbys. If it's good enough for them it's good enough for you. On a slight aside I'm sure I read somewhere that the Black Watch is just a variation on the Mackenzie without the black,red and white stripes. My favourite is the ancient Mackenzie, I think it looks really good - almost as good as the Galbraith.

It's the other way -- Mackeznie is a variant of the Government Sett; see my earlier post in this thread.

You MAY want to be careful wearing it if it's pleated to the stripe and you happen to be visiting a place where a regiment that itself wears that tartan in that fashion is based (such as Vancouver BC where the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada are located), otherwise you might have some fast explaining to do (and you may wind up having to buy rounds of beverages).
