Could be competition - the Globe, Dumfries Howff etc...

But what a lovely item to have with the whiskey collection, wonder if you can still put whiskey in it and then decant it from there!

Border Television carried a feature about this on this on their lunchtime news today (which they might repeat on the 6pm Lookaround programme) and they said it was expected to fetch around £800. They showed some pictures of The Globe, but no kilts.

Commisserations on being outbid. I share your disappointment that it won't be coming to Ferintosh. It really is amazing how much people will pay for Burns memorabilia. Hope its going to a good home where it can be put on display in an appropriate setting.

This was on the BBC website -

    Bard's hip flask fetches £7,200

The hip flask sold for about 10-times its forecast price
An 18th Century hip flask which once belonged to Robert Burns has sold for about 10-times its expected price at auction in Edinburgh.
It had been forecast to fetch between £600 and £800 but instead went under the hammer for £7,200.

The flask is believed to have been left by Burns at Hunthill House, near Jedburgh, in the Borders in the 1770s.

Auctioneers Bonhams said the price achieved by the hip flask had "surprised everyone".

Burns spent time touring the area in the 1770s and during his visit he often stayed in Hunthill House.

He is believed to have left this flask at Hunthill after one of his stays and subsequent generations of the family decided to hold on to it for sentimental reasons.

The item was recently acquired from the Rutherford family when they sold the property.

I had a look at the sale results, some stuff went for silly prices like a sgian dhubh for £348 and an otter sporan for £312 but a piper's doublet went for only £144 and a full kilt outfit (kilt, doublet, jabot, tartan hose and brogues) went for only £120 - that's right £120! A badger sporan went for £132.
