gilmore seemed to be suggesting that Captain shouldn't do that and rather than saying something negative to gilmore, I just gave Captain some moral support.
Of course it is not a competition between older and newer tartans. Indeed my favorite tartan and the only one I have strong connections to is from the 18th century. If my family today designed it's own tartan, (I have no desire to do that) I would certainly feel closer to it than any other tartan. Maybe you wouldn't but as you say it's all a matter of how the individual feels.
So I am sorry if my statement upset you but I was just referring to Captains situation. I don't quite know how you can read into that, that I was suggesting that some people did not have strong connections to their clan tartans.
Anyone who has read the posts on xmarks for a couple of days can see how strongly people feel about their clan connections and clan tartans. I think all of us, even those without any connections, respect that.
Anyway I apologize again.
Peter
Peter,
No worries -- you are quite right; after reading this post, and re-reading your original post, I see where you're going.
I certainly support Captain's efforts to design a tartan for his immediate family.
I'm afraid Bryan took my comment about my strong ties to my ancestors out of context as well; My immediate family inspires my connection to my ancestors, as well as my wife's French Cajun heritage.
I'll blame it on not enough coffee.
Cheers,
Todd
