Tartan has the same thread count in warp and weft. Otherwise it isn't tartan.

Yes - if the warp has 2BK 6R 2Y repeated over and over (i.e., no pivot point, completely asymmetric), the weaver would weave 2 Bk, 6R, 2Y over and over again in the weft for the complete tartan. In other words, if you pick up a swatch of tartan that doesn't have a selvedge edge, you shouldn't theoretically be able to tell which is the warp direction and which is the weft direction. They should look identical. In reality, every tartan I've ever measured is actually a bit longer measured parallel to the warp than to the weft (i.e., the blocks are not quite square), although they should be. But that doesn't change the fact that a tartan should have the same sequence and size of stripes in the warp as in the weft.
