A "Steam Cleaner" and a "Fabric Steamer" are two totally different animals.

A "Steam Cleaner" such as that used on rugs and upholstery is a marriage between a water heater/sprayer unit and a wet-dry vac. You spray hot, soapy water into your rug and then vacuum it up.

A "Fabric Steamer" actually generates live steam by boiling water and directing the steam towards the fabric.

I would not advocate using a Steam Cleaner on your kilts. A Fabric Steamer however is the perfect touch-up tool. I tell my customers to find a small, portable Steamer and use it to relax wrinkles from their pleats, to freshen their kilts between washing, and to remove odors such a tobacco smoke.

Thanks Steve. I guess what i was asking is can I use one for the other. Steam cleaner - no. Could I use a fabric steamer on the couch, would it even be worth it?

Actually, yes. Unless your Chesterfield is dirty from sitting on it after doing the gardening or changing the oil of your car. The thing that makes things smell musty and foul is bacteria. Steam is a very good killer of those little buggers and will leave fabrics fresh smelling.
So go ahead, lay your kilt out on the sofa and kill two bacteria with one pass.
De-wrinkle your kilt and freshen your couch at the same time. The perfect bachelor answer to both problems.
