All sounds very interesting, we have already discussed a cruise,( my wife and I) this sounds like the best of both worlds. Dates in 2008 are open, keep everyone posted.

This has a lot of possiblities....... It should be scheduled about 6 to 8 or more months out, to allow planning.

Now that's something I've always wanted to do. It seems like the prices on the river cruises though are higher than the others.

If we are really going to do this right, we need to get some input from some kiltmakers (Matt Newsome, Barb T.), some vendors (Rocky, Jerry, etc.), maybe some pipe instructors?, some historians (Todd?). This sounds like a great idea, now to push it along.

As far as location. . . tough choice. Alaska sounds nice. The Carribean is close for me, so I like that. Do they have cruises on the Ohio or Mississippi? I can't picture anything but the old paddlewheel steamer.
To make this truly international, how about a transAtlantic cruise to Scotland? Now THAT would be cool! (albeit pricey)

Just thinking on how the XMarks Vegas convention fell apart ... Anyhow:
There are Ohio and Mississippi River cruises - I found one site with off-season rates of $600-2000 USD for four-day cruises, with additional discounts for groups over 10 and booking six months in advance.

For a cheaper international option, we could see if there's a river cruise that starts in Canada and ends somewhere in the states. (I would book on that trip just to see my co-workers' expressions when they came to clear the boat: "Sir, there's 18 crew, 120 passengers, and they're all wearing kilts.")

Actually, that reminds me - there are Great Lakes cruises as well. Relatively inexpensive, international, convenient to both Canadian and American XMarkers, the ships aren't bad at all - just a thought.

This is a very interesting idea. My partner and I did a cruise every January for several years until work schedules changed this year. This year we did Scotland in January (Ferintosh Burns Supper), Barcelona in February and two weeks in Scotland in June. Next year is already planned with Burns Supper at Ferintoshin January (for me) and two weeks in England, Wales and perhaps Iceland in June. (In conjunction with the Storrington Gathering)

We were talking the other night that 2009 might be a good time for another cruise. Although I'll have to think about that as that would interfere with Ferintosh Burns Weekend 2009.

Well, it's a very interesting idea and one well worth considering.

Anyone buttling for me would have to do it for love - love of the celebrity life!!

As for the proposed cruise: I should like to suggest a Mediterranean cruise - it would be less expensive for us Europeans than travelling all the way to North America!! I am thinking of the savings that could be put into my Kilt Fund!
