    Alaskan Cruise #1

I just got back from a cruise through the Inside Passage to Southeast Alaska and it was a phenomenal trip. As the following photos will attest, it is the last unspoiled wilderness. My finger is sore from all the picture taking.

This is a view of Juneau from the ship as we were coming into dock.

The Mendenhall Glacier 12 miles north of downtown Juneau. Juneau is the capital of Alaska with a population of around 30,000. More than half the population of southeast Alaska lives in Juneau.

White Pass and Yukon Route narrow guage railroad out of Skagway. More than 30,000 stampeders made their way up the pass, but less than ten percent found any gold. Each person had to bring a ton of goods (2000 lbs) to cross over in the Yukon out of Alaska and this was where the Mountie lived who checked each stampeder for supplies.

Kayaking in the Eagle Islands north of Ketchikan. Yes, I was kilted in the kayak. The guide said he'd never guided anyone kilted before. It was a bit awkward getting in and out.

These pictures are all from inside Glacier Bay National Park.

    The Reid Glacier.

Margerie Glacier up close. This is a tidal glacier that calves off huge chunks of ice into the sea. We did get to see a chunk shear off.The cruise ship was 9 decks above water and the glacier towered over us.

The Grand Pacific Glacier. This glacier does not reach the water. It just melts and deposits all the dirt and rock it has been carrying into terminal morains. It's a big sucker.

    Kilted at Glacier Bay.

Nice pictures! Sounds like you had a good time in our fair state. Most people up here don't comment on my kilt - did you get very many comments?

For readers who might want to duplicate your trip on a budget, check out the Alaska Marine Highway System. It's a pretty economical way to see SE Alaska if you drive to Prince Rupert, BC then take the ferry as far north as Haines, AK.

Lest you think it's always cloudy in Alaska, here's some blue sky behind one of the College Glaciers out of Whittier:

Most of my time was spent on the ship, but overall, very few comments on the kilt. I did have a woman come up to me out on deck in Glacier bay and said she just wated to tell me she took my picture to show her husband. It seems that he is to be kilted at their daughter's wedding and wanted to prove there was a man kilted in Glacier Bay.

We looked at the Alaskan Marine Highway , but it requires more time, and we had elderly parents along as well.

Abax, you live in a wilderness wonderland. We thouroughly enjoyed our visit.

Excellent trip, Mowgli. I hope that was a 16-oz kilt you were wearing.
