Oh wow! Idea, A guy in a kilt, knitting, with a puppy playing at his feet. You'd have to have a stick to beat them off.
Toss in a toddler in a kilt and you have the irresistable combo. I have the puppy, kilt, and toddler in a kilt but I can't knit so I better get cracking.

The more I think about it, the more I want to take up knitting. Perhaps that will be my New Year's present to myself.

    Trials, errors, and success...!

I tried my hand at knitting once, last March. Bought a How-To-Knit kit and black and yellow yarn at Wal-Mart - and plunged right in. My first and only attempt at knitting so far.

However, the recipient and wearer of the article completely overshadows any knitting deficiencies!

(Maybe she needs another one, done in pink... er, marroon!... to coordinate with her daddy's other kilt color. )

In a vein very similar to kiltmaking, the resulting article can be worn with pride even with (or, because of) the "homemade" look about it.

Knitting is good. Knitting is addictive. Knitting is not cheap, you will not get cheaper socks because you make them own, but you won't want to wear the regular ones anymore. I agree that you should find someone to teach you, at least the basics, also a hat is an excellent starter project, you learn all the basics with a hat, and unlike a scarf, it ends.

Good luck, and then you can convince Yeti that he wants to finish learning

Knitting always scared me. It looks like some kind of voodoo.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Perhaps. I've done a timy bit of weaving and that was fun. In fact, I have taken the palm fronds from my trees and used them in basquet weaving. I'll have to read up on knitting.

I learned to knit over a year ago so I could make my own kilt hose. It isn't that hard and I learned from a kit I bought. After mastering the basics, I moved on to learning to knit socks. Now I have a couple of decent patterns for kilt hose and I am trying to find a yarn that comes in just the right colors to coordinate with the Gunn Ancient tartan.

I highly recommend going to your local yarn store and make friends. The ladies at my LYS have been very helpful whenever I have had questions.
