I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I've played paintball several times, and played kilted on some of those times too. I wore a UK Workmans, boots, and kneepads. Oh, I wore underwear too but nothing special. I figure if anyone gets an up kilt shot at me I deserved it.

I've never played airsoft but it looks fun too. Neither is very realistic but if you remember that being a great paintball player only means you are good at paintball, it can be fun.

What sucks is when you get taken out early in the match and have to sit out until the whistle blows for the next match. I prefer playing just with friends in the field. More fun and you can 'house rule' your outs and such.

Getting hit by a paintball stings, that way you know you're hit. You've just got to wear the right protection. Goggles are a must, jock, gloves, knee and elbow pads are also recommended. It's a blast and a half like a giant live action chess game, where women & men are equal and some payers even into retirement age. It's probably more a mental game than the short physical bursts when gaining an advantage. It's something thatveryone should try once. Of the twenty people that I got from work to go, all went again and more so as word spread.

BTW, they make little 6mm paintballs for airsoft. We use them as a training tool cause they are alot cheaper than simunitions rounds and they fit the holsters already.

Grant, so far i've found that airsoft pellets hurt alot less than paintballs. At the paintball field i play at we try to chrono our markers to around 280fps. The airsofters go for about 350fps.....but since the pellets have waaaaaay less mass, they hurt less. Then again, I'm wearing more clothing this time of year......but still

Airsoft does sound cool, in fact there is a WWII re-enactors group here in Ontario. When I find a pasttime I usually go full tilt. I've spent thousands on kilting, paintball and now radio control cars, tanks & boats. Anymore hobbies and I'll lose the house... .

Let's see two A-5 one done up as a Kalishnikov, the other MP5 SD, a Tiberious Tag-8 and a newly aquired X-7 w/ Flatline... And I've been kilted longer than paintballin'. It's been a whole year with kilts .

HAHAHAH jeez Grant you must have some sort of obessive-compulsive thing going on there!
I just got an A5 in the new digi camo for xmas. HAs the egrip. I'm seriously jealous of your mp5sd set up then as that's what I plan on doing to mine. Where's you get your SD shroud? Spec OPs Paintball?
Speaking of Kalashnikov's, that's what I want for airsoft. Nothing like an AK47 to tell the other team your the "bad guy".

I've only gone paintballing once, and it was pretty fun. I would do it again if the guys were going, but I wouldn't go out of my way to do it. There's just too many little things that bother me.

The first problem is that it isn't the same as the real thing. I know I shouldn't expect it to be, but that is what I really want. Adjusting to the difference between a paintball gun and a real one is an annoyance.

The thing which bugs me more however is all the rules and the structure of the game. The place I went didn't allow climbing things, jumping over obstacles or doing other things like which could theoretically lead to a minor injury and a major lawsuit. I also don't have access to the variety of weapons I would like. A paintball shotgun, sniper rifle, grenade launcher or mine would be a ton of fun (hell, I wanted to bring a paint gun to simulate a flamethrower) but it isn't an option. And I don't like that a hit anywhere is considered lethal. If I ever play it in a less controlled environment with a bunch of friends, I will probably suggest a rule stating that an "injured" limb cannot be used and that it should have to be patched up with a phony med kit within a certain amount of time or you're out.

And worst of all, I can't use my preferred tactics. I enjoy a shoot out as much as the next guy, but I love stealth. I want a game that allows me to sneak around at night, make my move when I want and from the direction I want, set traps, climb walls, pick locks, evade guards (or if absolutely necessary, neutralize them quickly and quietly and hide the body), accomplish my objective and get out of there before anyone knows what's happened.

If anyone knows of a place that would let me do that sort of thing, let me know.

I'm not saying all this to beat up on paintball, as the problem isn't with paintball itself. It's just that I can't separate my expectations and desires from the game, and that hurts the experience a bit. As such it's just easier for me to get my combat fix from halo 3 or mass effect.

By the way, I'd love to play kilted, but I'm not doing that to one of my kilts. That and any shot to the lower front or back of the kilt would inevitably lead to an argument about whether or not it should count since it could have gone between my legs.
